SAFE Food SAFE Horses
What is the SAFE Act?
The Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act S.1214/HR.1942 will
ban the slaughter of US horses on US soil and abroad
The global food supply, including the US, is contaminated with toxic horse meat. Congress and the USDA allow US horses, which are raised as athletes and companion animals as classified by the FDA, to be slaughtered for human consumption. US horses are not raised under the strict guidelines that livestock and food producing animals are. They receive any number of hundreds of equine drugs, clearly labeled "Do not use in horses intended for human consumption". In addition to veterinary drugs which are banned for use on slaughter horses, wild horses are known to carry infectious diseases that are equally harmul to humans. These drugs have been banned for use in livestock because they are known to pose serious health risks, including fatalities, to humans. Some of these equine medications and infectious diseases are actually on the Federal Select Agents and Toxins bioterrorism list. These diseases and drugs are NOT tested for in horsemeat. The SAFE Act will disqualify US horses from entering the food supply by banning them from slaughter and transport to slaughter across our borders.
We know that eating horsemeat is an unnecessary and grave health risk, but many people are unaware of the cruelty that is inherent to horse slaughter because of their muscular physique and long necks. They are "fight or flight" prey animals. The smell of blood in the slaughter plant, and screams of their friends slaughtered before them puts them into panic mode. The videos and photos of the slaughter process found on the internet are both heart wrenching and profoundly sickening.
Based on a Lake Research poll conducted several years ago, 80% of Americans are opposed to horse slaughter. The SAFE Act has an overwhelming amount of support from Congress, but is kept close to the vest of the committee Chairs who have received generous donations from those lobbying against the bill.
SAFE Food SAFE Horses Coalition is dedicated to educating the public of the US horse slaughter pipeline.
